When Life Gives You Limes

Last year I discovered, quite by accident, that I had a secret lime bush in my "garden." To say it's my garden is a stretch since I certainly don't do anything to care for it other than use the weedwhacker every now and then to almost arbitrarily buzz away the overgrowth, regardless of varietal (since I can't tell a good plant from a bad) to keep it all from overtaking the side yard between Mary's house and mine (right, now we're on the other side of the house from this one). I harvested the majority of the fruit I could see as soon as I found the citrus plant and showed the product here in this post.

This year, I waited a couple more months to the end of summer to see if the limes would ripen up more. You can see the result in the photo above, a good bowl of about a dozen or so fruits. About twice as large as last year, and, in the pic below, when compared side-by-side with a store bought lime that I happened to have in my fridge from a week or so ago, looking much fresher, juicier and plumper.

Taste wise -- definitely NOT sweeter. In fact, about three times as tart as the store bought lime and about the same tartness as what I remember from last year's "crop."

So I guess these are Key Limes. They're supposed to be more tart than regular limes.

I placed these guys I cut up for this demo into a small pitcher and I may add a couple more to make some limeade. Maybe I'll snag a Key Lime Pie recipe and try my hand at that too?

With new restrictions on food stamps next year, I may be living on these and my pineapple. Well, at least that'll cover dessert...for a day or two.
