Games People Play

Above is pictured the cover of a magazine which I remember being one of my favorites of my youth. I probably held a subscription to it from around the age of about 14 or so to well into my early thirties. I freakin' loved GAMES.

I salivated, waiting for its delivery to my my parent's home mailbox so I could snatch it up as quick as possible to start on its awesome puzzles. This, along with OMNI, Smithsonian Magazine and National Geographic, were my jam. This was waaaay before computers. Magazines were the connection to the outside word. And, for a kid like me, growing up in a blue collar, rough-n'-tumble economically downtrodden New England conservative town, I needed these mail-order angels of hope to deliver me from the fate I was destined to befall should I not seek out intellectual superior beings on our world that could save me.

Well, lo and behold, they still exist. I think they went out of print for a while in the late nighties. What publication didn't. But now they're back. I didn't waste a second in resubscribing. I wonder if like AMEX if they have records that can search back and see I'd been a subscriber since like 1977?

They now offer print or digital version. Of course I opted for print. I want my nostalgic experience. Unfortunately, I actually don't have a pencil (to do the crossword and other Pencilwise puzzles) so I guess I'll have to go buy one, and, a pencil sharpener. Oh, how nostalgic indeed! I'm actually loving it!

Smithsonian and Nation Geographic are kinda obsolete IMHO by the nature of the internet in general in that you can search shit on your own from various regions of the world and see it for yourself as you like but OMNI was and would still be unique in that it offered science information from authoritative sources in a concise and interesting format. YouTube offers that too but frankly there are a lot of kooks you have to wade through and it'd be nice to sit back with a good old print mag and just read, so in that vein, I'd love to see OMNI resurrected as well.

Wait a minute. Playboy originally owned GAMES and Bob Guccione owned OMNI. What's with these intellectual minded publications owned by porn magnates? Is that to mean that they were horny brainiacs?
