Here's one of my Quirkymen, Steven, who frankly I've pretty much stopped watching for a while since I eventually got the impression that I was drawn to him for all the bad similarities we had, including narcissism, which becomes very hard to bear when displayed in someone else. Hello -- Ric? But I recently resubscribed to Steven just a week ago or so since I knew he was a Spirit Airlines flight attendant and wanted to see how he was going to deal with his new situation. Of course he's been handling it as if Spirit Airlines ceased its existence just to spite him. It's all about him.
I'm growing to really dislike Steven. And that actually makes watching him now even more entertaining. With his high-strung bitchy queen attitude, heavily masked by his incredibly fake altruism and inclusiveness, his lack of education credentials, work experience and age, and living in Vegas, a city of a bazillion low-end job prospects and not much else (unless you have the creds), this aught to be quite the shit show.
Well, it's started. Rather than ride out the summer on his unemployment (which he said he would get a good $500 a week) and cashed-in 401K (maybe he never signed up for one since he never mentioned it) and be more picky with a really good option, like another flight attendant job since he admittedly loves that field, he went to a state job fair and got an offer for a job he says he'll take.
I feel so bad for him since I already know the scoop. He mentioned the basics of the job in his video, shown below, and seems amazed that the recruiter seems to feel he would be such a good fit. Curious, after his description sounded oh so familiar, I looked it up on the Nevada website of that job fair. Here are some of the key aspects:
MENTAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN 1 - MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS WAIVED
This position provides care, training, and treatment to adolescents with behavioral and emotional disturbances in a 24 hour/7 day a week in a residential setting at the Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility
Youth served by the PRTF program are designated as Severely Emotionally Disturbed (SED) and exhibit significant behavioral challenges including physical and verbal aggression, non-compliance, challenges to authority figures, school problems (academic and behavioral), peer and social difficulties, and family issues.
Instruct and oversee clients in developing daily living skills including bathing, brushing hair and teeth, dressing, making beds
Implement verbal intervention for clients who are escalating and, as necessary, restrain or utilize appropriate behavioral and environmental controls for clients who are a threat to themselves or others and may be hostile, combative, aggressive or assaultive; follow facility procedures regarding techniques and duration of restriction; notify appropriate personnel of action taken and document as required; conduct suicide prevention watches by checking on clients at specified intervals.
Yeah, I did work just like this back in the day. It's grueling and depressing in that you want to help these people you have sympathy for but the negative aspects of their behaviors can be daunting. I did this when I was young and fit, and I and my co-workers doing this had to be. It was very physical. I have no idea what they're going to have a man Steven's age do. Just as reference, from the job description, I can gather that these clients would not be like the relatively easy, usually laidback and high-functioning folks I worked with at Ridge or Lakewood, it would be significant behaviors like the profoundly autistic at Amego or the severely DD and institutionalized behaviors of Wrentham, except worse since they'd be younger, likely stronger and, since no mention of mental disability, maybe much craftier.
Staff in this setting get spit on, punched, scratched, deal with incontinence of urine, incontinence of feces, and may need to "put down" (place under a protective hold) with their full body, all while the above is going on! Oh, and he best get contacts or he'll be going through a lot of eyeglasses.
Even if they give him a very mild-mannered caseload, with his way of talking and lack of situational awareness, they'd still take advantage of him and he'd end up getting in trouble for either giving in to them or being duped by them.
Another constant problem for gay men in this field is if some teenaged boy in his care wants to fuck with his reputation, it can be a nightmare of false "SA" accusations, not to mention what other less-open minded co-workers may imagine in their heads, and also make false claims of what they "witnessed."
I give him a week out of training, if he makes it out of training that is.
The other thing about the clip below I want to point out, and almost commented on it, was the very part where I took the screencap above. For a good part of the video, Steven is vlogging while he's at the library where the job fair is being held and, I guess to get to an area that's quieter to vlog to us, he chooses to go into a little hall set aside as an art gallery. But, as you can see, and Steven SHOULD have seen, the current exhibits in there are focused on the Holocaust with pictures and items on display including, as shown above, a photo of the infamous railway stop at Auschwitz; and Steven is just loudly blabbing away about his job interviews, being all noisy and expressive, right there amongst depictions of Nazis and concentration camp dead bodies! Hello -- CLUELESS!
I'll add an EDIT on to this post to keep you updated as to what happens. But with this man's indifference to the world around him, I'm certain it'll be hilariously bad.
