A Neighborhood Of Ghosts

Okay, now it certainly is going to get real tonight as temps drop into some record-breaking shit. 24° is the new forecast for tonight's low and with very breezy wind gusts of up to 36 mph, wind chills will reach well into the teens. IN CENTRAL FLORIDA!

But what good is it to do this? No, those aren't pitiful ghost costumes, that's my neighbors' attempts at saving their sub-tropical plants by covering them with sheets.

I mean, for warm-blooded animals, yes, covering with something makes sense since, of course, the body heat is reflected back and insulated from the loss due to the cold outside the covering. I watched a news report on covering outdoor pipes with wraps to prevent water in the pipes from freezing and potentially bursting, but, as they said, this works by reducing the wind chill just enough to get the pipes through the worst of the weather. But plants... I don't know. There's no heat reflectivity, of course, since they don't radiate heat and even sub-tropical plants are sensitive to cold temps beyond what mere sheets could possibly prevent so... I guess we'll see. What's more is that although the temps will certainly be down right frigid, the sun will rise in the morning and daytime highs for the next two days, for example, are 51° and 58° respectively... well above freezing, so these green-leaved things will only need to "hold on baby" for a few short hours.

I'm not covering any of my yard plants. My bougainvillea, my Cape Honeysuckle, my Mother of Millions and even my "crops" of lime and pineapple, will just have to make do on their own. Good luck fellas, I'll be toastin' a nice hot cup of cocoa to ya from inside with the comfort of both the main heat pump and mini space heater going strong!
