These are my newest addictions. Yes, me, a lifelong black coffee drinker. And mind you, that's black with no sugar -- I've now become addicted to adding a "spoonful" of coffee "creamer" to my daily cup or two. And, yes, I know it's very likely quite bad for me.
Now mind you, at least I'm not using the sugared varieties. These babies are sugar free*. But, as I joke in my title, I know the rest of the main ingredients do not include any dairy products**, including anything like cream. It's basically oils. Not lard, no, I am joking there, but still, the oils are the unhealthy partially hydrogenated kind*** which induce the body to have the higher amounts of bad cholesterol and lower amounts of good cholesterol, so it's said. And that's exactly why I'm on atorvastatin so it's actually working against my mediation and increasing my risk for plaque build up and heart disease. Oh, and there's a laundry list of other chemicals to stabilize and preserve and colorize and mouth-feel this stuff into submission as well so....
Yeah so, why do I drink it? It tastes delicious. And it's a treat. You know, like those donuts or that ice cream that do have sugar and the trans fats as well that are also just as bad, but this is far less fattening so I think it suffices to trick me into feeling at least a bit more satisfied when I have cravings for something sweet. And other than Ol' Georgie, I think carb addiction is a big thing with me so this may help in that. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know for sure. But it is a small part of my overall eating regimen. And it's usually temporary. I have these Coffee-Mate kicks once in a blue moon and I eventually make my way back to black so I guess until then I'll just have to hope I don't do too much in the way of damage.
*Sucralose and Acesulfame Potassium, artificial sweeteners that carry their own list of controversies.
**It does have less than 2% "milk derivative" in the form of Sodium Caseinate. Yummy.
***But several varieties are labeled as having coconut oil which, according to some health sites contains MCT which they say is a good thing. (But likely only in their variety of oil that they sell on their site, wink wink).
