Here's one that at first you'd think was relatively easy to do but getting things to work just so was a bit tricky. One great example of "making it work" are the little triangle mini-dormers up on the top middle of the roof. Those are simply shadows that can only be seen in this afternoon lighting since real dormers wouldn't work since there's no extra floor up there; I had to attempt to make them and once they failed to stick I moved on to the next one and though the failed attempt disappeared, the shadow didn't. Trial and error with this game...
Here's the real McCoy for reference. Built in 1904, the house was part of a vast Greenwich, Connecticut farm that has since been subdivided into tawny residences for the rich and famous including Ron Howard. This manor no longer exists though as it pretty much was abandoned from the mid 20th century to its demolition in 1984.
I just realized, looking again at the reference photo, I should have made the main roof a hipped roof not a gable. Too late now since I sure am not going to have to destroy all the work I did up there including the mini-dormer shadow trick effect.
