As I read it, I'll first likely be affected by the end of the year when as of Jan.1, 2026, "junk foods" will no longer be allowed to be bought with food stamps. At least here in Florida, of course, and several other likely-red states. Candy, ready made desserts and sodas are the main foodstuffs defined as junk food. Now I can see the benefits on the surface but once you start down the restriction highway, it's hard to stop. I'm sure conservatives would like nothing more than to restrict food stamp purchases to just flour, raw meat and raw vegetables thinking poor people need to get their womenfolk in that kitchen and fix up some home-cooked meals! Problem is, do all poor people have access to kitchens (never mind obsequious and obedient womenfolk)?
The changes are also going to affect me in that people up to the age of 64 will need to prove that they are looking for work. I didn't see if handicaps or health issues in general would waive that requirement. At present, I think the cut off age is 59 and I do remember having to do the bullshit questionnaire when I was getting SNAP prior to reaching that age attesting that I was "trying" to find a job. Of course it's unenforceable since who are they going to get to verify the millions of claims to see who's lying? I mean, to be honest, they didn't even require I show proof that I was low income to qualify in the first place -- I just said I was (which I am but how would they know?).
I guess I'll be looking into doing like Charlie here and I'll soon be eating my leather shoes.
