Down the rabbit hole.

Looks to me we're hitting numbers more than twice the amounts of any other time in this whole pandemic of daily new cases reported. As you can see from the graph above, over 1.6 million for one day, New Year's Eve, just two days ago. A few less than the day before on Dec. 30 when it was over 1.8 million. Still, that's over 3.4 million in just two days. 

The holiday is likely delaying the thin grey bar for yesterday's numbers. Or, there's nobody at the helm reporting to the website I got the graph from since they're out sick.

EDIT: Here's less than a week later. BTW, these are global figures but still. The US contribution to these totals for yesterday (Jan. 5) alone was over 750,000:
